Saturday the 31st of May offered us ideal showing conditions: sunny, warm and clear. Claire (Clear Intentions) and Grace (Graphic's Graceful Design) loaded eagerly onto the trailer as if they knew their destination and were ready to take on whatever it held. The arrival was uneventful and they both stood quietly during the get ready before their in-hand classes. No screaming, no tapdancing, just quiet expectation. At this point I wondered if they would show well, but my concern was unnecessary. As our fine groom, Stacey Stearns, commented, "They act like they've done this all before!"

Their first and second ribbons were a nice way to begin their show careers for sure, but truly the success was in their demeanor and confidence throughout the day. Achieving this goal, of producing calmly enthusiastic athletes who can be judged superior to horses who are not turned out daily nor given the benefit of energetic bodywork, emotional and physical balancing with bach flower remedies or herbal blends, chiropractic care and supportive shoeing (as opposed to show shoeing), means more to me than the ribbons do. The fillies' showability is enhanced by our nontraditional approach, and we put their individual needs before the expected norms for this phase of their careers.

Many thanks to farrier, Mark Estes, who shod Grace in an aluminum plate with a squared front toe, set back to support her tendons, which have been challenged to keep up with her four inches of growth in the past six months; to Dr. Cynthia Reynolds, DVM, for addressing the chiropractic and acupuncture needs of both fillies; and to Stacey Stearns and Sara Couture for their devoted care and attention to detail. The clear intention of all to provide the broad based support the horses need and deserve is the base from which this success springs!
